Wool Serge 800 vs Acoustic Molton: a fair comparison

Compare width, weight and published absorption at matching fullness and wall spacing before choosing a curtain fabric.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Compare matching test conditions first, then check roll width, cloth weight and the installation.

The data, explained.

01 / THE DETAIL

Begin with a common installation

A comparison is most useful when the two fabrics are tested in an arrangement you can reproduce. Here the fullness and cavity match. The published single-number values provide a starting point; they do not tell you how either cloth will solve every frequency or every room.

Use the full results table to inspect other available configurations. Avoid selecting each material’s best number while ignoring the space needed to obtain it.

02 / THE DETAIL

Roll width changes the making plan

Wool Serge 800 is supplied at 150 cm width in our catalogue; Acoustic Molton is 300 cm wide. For a given panel, those widths can produce different numbers of vertical joins and different linear metre quantities. A wider roll does not automatically eliminate joins once hems and fullness are included.

Compare complete configurations using your actual dimensions. Our roll-width article shows why a nominally neat fit can still need another width.

03 / THE DETAIL

Weight is a practical design input

Grams per square metre describes cloth mass per unit area. The finished load depends on how much cloth is made into the curtain, plus linings and heading components. Ask the track supplier or installer to review the total load, the run, the supports and the operation.

A higher fabric weight is not a substitute for a frequency-specific report. Read how curtain weight is estimated before using a catalogue weight to choose hardware.

04 / THE DETAIL

Make a shortlist, then confirm the details

Compare texture and colour samples in the intended light. Decide whether appearance, stack space, seam position or a particular documented acoustic arrangement is the priority. Keep these requirements with the measurements when requesting stock confirmation. If a lining is added, check what evidence exists for that complete assembly rather than assuming the unlined result still applies.
