Choosing a curtain lining: width, quantity and performance
See why face cloth and lining need separate cutting plans, and what adding a lining means for acoustic evidence.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Calculate each material on its own roll width, and check acoustic evidence for the complete layered assembly.
The data, explained.
Swipe the diagram or table sideways to see all the detail ↔
| Material | Roll width | Total drops | Order length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Example face cloth | 300 cm | 4 | 11 m |
| Standard or blackout lining | 138 cm | 6 | 17 m |
300 cm coverage, 250 cm finished drop, 100% fullness, two equal panels; 5 cm side hems, 2 cm join loss, 20 cm top/bottom allowance, 0% extra ordering allowance. Each material rounded up separately. View the sources ↓
01 / THE DETAIL
Give the lining a clear purpose
Decide whether the lining is needed for light control, appearance or another specified requirement. Then select a named option with suitable product information. The word “lining” describes its role in the curtain; it does not establish its acoustic or optical performance.
Our standard and blackout lining options are both 138 cm wide. These are Studio Curtains supply specifications and should not be confused with a similarly named manufacturer fabric in a different width.
02 / THE DETAIL
Do not copy the face-fabric metre quantity
The example uses a 300 cm face cloth and a 138 cm lining. Both cover the same finished curtain, but the narrower material needs more drops. The table uses the same allowances for each calculation to show that roll width alone can change the amount to order.
The face material requires 11 whole metres, while the lining requires 17 whole metres in this example. This is a purchasing calculation, not a recommendation to assume identical manufacturing details for every lined curtain. Review the finished construction before acceptance.
03 / THE DETAIL
An added layer changes the acoustic assembly
A single-layer report does not become evidence for a lined curtain just because the face fabric is unchanged. Adding a layer changes the construction. Request evidence for the proposed arrangement where a stated acoustic result is part of the brief.
Read the test-report guide and keep light-control requirements separate. Our blackout and dimout article explains why the window edges also need attention.
04 / THE DETAIL
Check the whole order before confirming
In the configurator, choose the face cloth and lining together to see their combined price. Sewing is included; track, hardware, delivery and installation are confirmed separately. The order flow prepares a request for stock checking and email confirmation. Before acceptance, confirm the physical colour, heading, lining, cutting plan and intended finished dimensions.
