Wool Serge 420, 565 or 800: compare the evidence
A matched-condition comparison of three wool serge weights, their published absorption and practical handling considerations.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Choose from matching test results and the whole installation brief; weight alone is not a performance rating.
The data, explained.
Swipe the diagram or table sideways to see all the detail ↔
| Fabric | Weight | Width | SAC / class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wool Serge 420 | 420 g/m² | 150 cm | 0.85 / B |
| Wool Serge 565 | 565 g/m² | 150 cm | 0.90 / A |
| Wool Serge 800 | 800 g/m² | 150 cm | 0.95 / A |

01 / THE DETAIL
What the numbers can help you decide
The shared test arrangement lets you compare a documented aspect of performance while keeping two important installation variables fixed. The table does not provide a universal ranking for every application. A room with limited cavity depth or a different fullness needs its own review.
Open each fabric specification for the technical documents: Wool Serge 420, Wool Serge 565, Wool Serge 800. Keep the exact product reference in your enquiry so the correct data pack can be checked.
02 / THE DETAIL
The same width does not mean the same load
All three listed rolls are 150 cm wide. For an otherwise identical cutting plan they therefore use the same nominal cloth area, while their different areal weights produce different cloth masses. The heading, lining and hardware add further load.
For a simple 10 m² piece of cloth, multiplying by 420, 565 or 800 g/m² gives 4.20, 5.65 or 8.00 kg respectively. These are cloth-only examples, not complete curtain weights or track approvals. Use the quantity and mass calculator with the actual making allowances.
03 / THE DETAIL
Review handling as well as the closed curtain
A curtain may be drawn many times each day. Consider who will operate it, where it stacks and whether the run has bends. Discuss the proposed load and use with the installer when choosing manual or motorised operation. A motor does not remove the need for suitable fixings and support.
Our installation guide gives you a checklist for that conversation. For a theatre, also review the performance-space guide.
04 / THE DETAIL
Ask for the evidence you actually need
If the brief is about low-frequency behaviour, request the relevant frequency data rather than choosing by a single rating. If colour, appearance or frequent movement governs the decision, include those criteria explicitly. The most useful selection is a fabric that fits the documented acoustic arrangement and the way the space will be operated.
