How much do acoustic curtains weigh?
Turn fabric gsm and cutting area into a cloth-mass estimate, then understand what a track specification still needs.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Cloth mass = cut area × fabric weight. Add the rest of the curtain assembly before specifying the track.
The data, explained.

| Cloth | Area | Weight | Cloth mass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wool Serge 420 | 10 m² | 420 g/m² | 4.20 kg |
| Wool Serge 565 | 10 m² | 565 g/m² | 5.65 kg |
| Wool Serge 800 | 10 m² | 800 g/m² | 8.00 kg |

01 / THE DETAIL
Gsm describes area, not the finished curtain
A fabric’s gsm value is its mass in grams per square metre. To estimate a piece of cloth in kilograms, multiply its area in square metres by gsm and divide by 1,000. The table keeps the area constant so the relationship is easy to see.
For a made curtain, use the cloth actually included in the cutting plan. Finished track coverage multiplied by finished drop can understate the quantity because fullness, hems and joins add cloth.
02 / THE DETAIL
Use cut area rather than ordered offcuts
Our quantity calculator uses the number of widths, nominal roll width and cut drop to estimate cloth area. Extra ordered material that remains as an offcut is not all hanging on the track. The result is still an estimate: usable widths, trimming and making details can change the actual mass.
If the curtain has a lining, calculate that material separately using its own weight and quantity. Where a lining weight is unknown, do not treat it as weightless. Get the full assembly reviewed before choosing support hardware.
03 / THE DETAIL
Total weight is only one hardware input
A track needs a suitable load capacity for the particular arrangement. Its span, support spacing, carriers, bends and opening method also matter. Concentrated load in a gathered stack can differ from an evenly spread closed curtain. The wall or ceiling structure must be suitable for the fixing design.
Our track and installation guide helps you record the mounting position and operation. Send the complete curtain specification and site information to the track supplier or installer for checking.
04 / THE DETAIL
Keep acoustic selection and load checks connected
Changing from a lighter to a heavier cloth after a track has been chosen may change the hardware requirement. Changing fullness can alter both the cloth mass and the tested acoustic arrangement. Use the wool serge comparison to review those decisions together, and confirm the final dimensions, layers and heading as one specification.
