Theatres & performance spaces / APPLICATION GUIDE

Set the scene. Shape the room.

Theatres and black-box spaces use drapery to define what an audience sees and to adapt the room to different performances. Masking, acoustic treatment and light control should each have a clear role in the specification.

THE ROOM & THE REQUIREMENT

Stage masking & variable room response.

A spoken-word event, amplified performance and unamplified recital can need different room conditions. Curtain tracks and stack positions should support those changes while retaining sightlines, access and the intended stage geometry.

01

Define the visible stage

Use legs, borders and perimeter masking to conceal offstage areas and focus the audience view.

02

Vary exposed absorption

Retractable drapes can change the treated area between event types.

03

Control unwanted light

Assess window and access-point light separately from the stage masking requirement.

PLACEMENT & SPECIFICATION

Make the detail
fit the room.

Start with sightline drawings and the performance area, then coordinate perimeter or stage drapes with lighting positions and operational routes.

Performance boundaryAcoustic or masking drapes are not substitutes for a safety fire curtain. Venue-specific performance, safety and engineering requirements need separate review.

What to establish

Performance modes
Describe the event types and whether each is amplified.
Sightlines and movement
Check the curtain in open, closed and stacked positions from audience seats.
Loads and documentation
Provide cloth quantities for track design and review the appropriate material certificates for the venue.

Confirm the selected material’s certificates, care requirements and the final track and fixing design for your installation.

FABRIC STARTING POINTS

Build your shortlist.

Compare these ranges against the room brief. A suggested range is not a verified performance prediction for your room or selected lining.

Wool Serge 800A heavy stage and acoustic range to compare against the brief.

Wool Serge 3.0mA wide wool serge option for larger runs.

Premium Molton 3.0A masking option where visual concealment is the primary job.

YOUR PROJECT BRIEF

Bring the room
into the conversation.

Stage and auditorium drawings, sightlines, performance types, rigging information and the venue’s technical brief.

Discuss your project ↗
Should the curtain stay closed for every event?

The useful amount of absorption depends on the room and performance. Define operating positions for different event modes and assess their effect during commissioning.
