Acoustic curtains vs soundproof curtains: what changes?
Understand absorption, sound insulation and transparent masking before specifying curtains for an echoing or noisy room.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Start by identifying where the unwanted sound travels: around your room, between rooms, or through a speaker covering.
The data, explained.

| Your problem | Evidence to request | What it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Echo inside a room | Absorption report and mounting details | How the tested assembly absorbs sound |
| Noise entering another space | Sound-insulation report for the complete assembly | How that construction resists transmission |
| Concealing loudspeakers | Acoustic-transparency report | How the covering affects transmitted sound |

01 / THE DETAIL
An echo problem starts inside the room
If speech sounds smeared or a clap produces a repeated reflection, the room’s hard surfaces may be contributing to the problem. Absorbent curtains introduce a soft, folded surface that can reduce reflected energy. The effect depends on the fabric, covered area, air space and the other finishes in the room. Start with our acoustic curtain range and identify the surfaces you can actually cover.
A useful brief describes when the problem happens, who uses the room and whether the curtains will be open or closed during that activity. A flexible meeting room needs an operational plan as well as an attractive fabric.
02 / THE DETAIL
Noise through a wall is a different brief
If you can hear activity from the adjoining room, a high absorption class alone does not establish the isolation you need. Doors, glazing, ventilation and gaps may all be transmission paths. Ask for evidence covering the complete proposed separating construction, including its edges.
J&C Joel distinguishes absorbent drapery from multilayer insulating systems. We do not apply a multilayer-system claim to a single cloth selected in the configurator. Read how to read a test report before comparing headline numbers.
03 / THE DETAIL
Do not turn an absorption rating into a percentage
A published coefficient is not the percentage by which the whole room becomes quieter. It also cannot be converted directly into a decibel reduction across a doorway. The test method and assembly tell you what a number describes.
For example, Wool Serge 800 has several published configurations. Choosing one fabric name does not choose the fullness, air gap or installed area that produced a result.
04 / THE DETAIL
Build a brief that can be checked
Record the noise source, the listener’s location, the available curtain footprint and the required opening arrangement. Add photographs and dimensions using our visual measuring guide. If privacy between spaces is the goal, say so explicitly when discussing your project.
